Project 2 – Ex 1 Groups of Objects.

I chose a collection of objects that were a contrast of old and new technology – a victorian iron, old fashioned tin can, mp3 charger, light bulb and water pump. My initial loose drawing was in charcoal and very much my style drawing, but I didn’t feel it necessarily achieved the brief.

For my second drawing I used an olive pencil and moved the objects to create a more compact composition. The pencil created much cleaner lines and I was more able to express the shape of the objects. When I’d finished drawing them I went back and looked at separate elements of the composition from different angles and sketched them around the outside as an aide memoire to explore in assignment 1.

What went well
Revising my work and changing materials and technique created a better final product. The original arrangement of the objects felt too loose and taking time to rearrange them – looking at the spaces around them and their relationship to each other proved beneficial.

Even better if
I produce more preliminary sketches investigating more interesting angles. Look back at the ‘blueprint’ drawing of the water pump from earlier. Apply this technique to all of the objects.

Next steps
Try out different medias and experiment with paper to find out if this create a more expressive final image.
